The renewables energy sources of Ukraine

Renewable energy is widely used in the world and in Ukraine. Pollution of environment, destruction of the ozone layer and climate changes provoke humans to find the alternative sources of energy. In fact, we have heard and known about alternative energy. Renewable energy is the solar, wind, Water and biomass. However, all types of renewable energy sources can be used by Ukraine to become energy independent?

EU Member States predict the optimistic prognosis on energy generation from renewable sources in the future: by the 2020, the share of renewable energy in the total energy production will be 20%, and by the 2030 – even 50%! The development rates of alternative energy in Ukraine is insignificant compared with the global ones. Accordingly, to the Energy Strategy of Ukraine the share of renewable energy in the total energy production has to be 7% by the 2020, and 13% – by the 2025. However, in general, annually in Ukraine the share of implementation of renewable energy is increasing. For example, for 2017 the capacity of alternative energy increased by 23%. In such manner, the total capacity of green energy facilities is close on 1.5 gigawatt. Moreover, we would like to note that solar energy is a leader among other renewable energy sources in Ukraine. By the end of 2017, the installed capacity of solar power plants in Ukraine is 735.8 MW, wind farms – 506.2 MW, mini hydro power plants – 94.6 MW, solar roof – 6 MW, bioenergy plants – 73.1 MW. Analytics and experts expect that an indicator of installed renewable energy sources in Ukraine will increase by the end of 2018.

Why solar energy is ahead wind energy? Wind energy requires much investments for development, maintenance and more difficult in installing of wind turbines, that`s why it develops slowly. Moreover, planned activity of the construction of wind farms is a subject of procedure of environmental impact assessment (in accordance to the law of Ukraine №2059-19 «On environmental impact assessment» construction of two or more wind turbines the height is 50 m and more). Except wind energy, construction of hydro power plant of any capacity and hydroelectric pumped storage power plants also are the subject of environmental impact assessment. Only planned activity of construction of solar power plants does not require environmental impact assessment. Therefore, in view of the foregoing, it follows that solar energy is developing more rapidly, than other types of renewable energy sources.

Besides wind, solar and hydropower, Ukraine has perspectives to develop bioenergy. Last year, bioenergy sector generated electricity by 13.5% more than in 2016. Nevertheless, producers of electricity by using biomass are the last among all types of renewable energy sources. Biomass are sugar and stock beets and their residues, potatoes, corn and cereals for producing liquid, solid and gaseous biological fuel. In addition, cultivation of perennials, which are unpretentious to climate and soil, is a perspective for bioenergy. In other words, Ukraine has resources and chance to develop the renewable energy on plant biomass.
